6 tips to help you spend less when preparing to go to university

6 tips to help you spend less when preparing to go to university
Going to university isn’t cheap –one of the costs that’s often overlooked is all the stuff you need to take with you.

We’re talking before the first instalment of your student loan, when you’re trying to prepare for the most significant event of your life in those last few weeks of summer. No pressure.

Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a list of 6 tips on how to keep the costs down and acquire the necessary things whilst spending as little as possible. Here they are:
  1. Check out what you already own-Although university is an exciting new stage in life, you don’t need everything you bring with you to be new and sparkling, especially if keeping to your budget is a priority. Although it can be tempting to accompany the brand new you with brand new things, that’s frankly unnecessary.  So first things first, check out what you already own. Duvet and pillows? Check. Pencil case, pens and pencils? Check. An entire wardrobe of clothes? Check!
  2. Pilfer what you can from your parents (with their permission!)-Chances are your parents won’t leave you in the lurch, and they might be able to supply a few things to get you started. Plenty of new students won’t own their own kitchen or household items, but your parents will, and if you’re lucky they’ll be able to spare a few things; think old plates, a frying pan and clothes pegs.
  3. Research-Sometimes you need more expensive items for uni, like a laptop. This will be expensive regardless, but one way you can reduce the cost is taking the time to do research. You’ll definitely need a laptop to get through university and complete all of your essay writing, but you don’t need a super expensive one.

It’s not just about getting the best price either; you’ll want to get a decent quality, because the last thing you want is it breaking midway through the year! So check out deals and reviews online and shop around to allow you to make the right decision. You want to make sure you get your money’s worth, especially on a tight budget.
  4. Check out the student sections of cheap shops-You’ve probably already noticed the banners and brightly coloured stands in a wide variety of shops, advertising great deals for students heading off to university for the first time.

You can pretty much buy everything you could ever want so they’re a great place to start for all the things you don’t have. It’s also great value; where things are directly targeted at students, they have a price tag to match.

But be careful… things might seem cheap, but the cost is the same regardless of whether you buy one thing for £100 or 100 things for £1! So whilst these sections can be a great budget-friendly option, it’s important to remember…
  5. Don’t buy what you don’t need-It’s easy to be blinded by the treasure trove of student sections, but the truth is you don’t need everything. Kitchen utensils are plentiful in their variety, but let’s face it, are you really going to use an apple de-corer, or a garlic crusher? Put it back – and if you really are desperate for it, then you can wait until you have your student loan, or ask for one for Christmas.

Even a pizza cutter isn’t strictly necessary – you can just use a knife (although I’d be lying if I said my university pizza cutter didn’t get a lot of use!)
  6. Wait until you get there-Of course, it’s great to be proactive and well-prepared. But sometimes, a little patience can save a lot of money.

When stocking up for university, people often get a bit carried away; from toasters, kettles, panini presses to toilet brushes, bathmats and bins… spot the problem yet? You will when you arrive at your university accommodation to discover every single one of your new flatmates has turned up with exactly the same. No flat needs seven kettles and five toasters, and there’s certainly not going to be any room to store them all.
So the best thing to do is wait until you get there and see what others have brought. If you do need to get a toaster, you can split the cost and buy one together – budget-friendly and a great way to bond with your new friends! In terms of course books, unless your university have sent you through a really clear list of what books you will need, it’s sometimes worth waiting as well in case you buy the wrong editions and end up wasting money on books you don’t need to write coursework.

The End of Lawyers – By Richard Susskind

The End of Lawyers – By Richard Susskind

This book will give you in depth analysis of various ways through which up-and-coming technologies are changing the prospect of legal profession. As this human race is becoming all the more connected and information can be shared effortlessly, there’s an increase in the pressure to re-examine the way legal provisions are being offered and to ensure they’re efficient enough and easy on one’s pocket!

Richard has brilliantly argued that the present market can no more put up with the weight of lawyers whose billing costs an arm and a leg for duties that a paralegal is capable of and must carry out at a lower cost. He also says that this would eventually lead to obsolescence of conventional attorneys who’re already fulfilling these tasks. Moreover, the novelist offers tips and various tools to help solicitors plan their future.

Anonymous Lawyer – By Jeremy Blachman

Anonymous Lawyer – By Jeremy Blachman

The book, Anonymous Lawyer, narrates the experience of a self-motivated attorney who ventures to become the chairman of his company. His hunger for power sees no boundaries and no one out there would refuse paying even a single penny to attain is objectives.

Nonetheless, there are quite a few hurdles that he had to triumph over on his path towards success. This journey of him entails a bitter contender and wife who has mastered the skill of spending cash more quickly than he even earns.

Not only will you find this book interesting to read and enjoyable, but also stumble upon am unusual glimpse of the inner functioning of the leading law companies all across the globe!

To Kill A Mockingbird – By Harper Lee

To Kill A Mockingbird – By Harper Lee

It’s common that most solicitors are seen as cagey, self-centred and of questionable honesty. But, this novel portrays a lawyer,Atticus Finch, in a positive light whose honesty is unwavering.

Written in tactile brilliance, this book was declared as a Southern Romantic Regionalism and the spirit-corroding shame of the cultured white Southerner in the conduct of Negro. In this book, The Mockingbird is considered as the representation of innocence.

The line, “Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it is a sin to kill a mockingbird” is in itself a metaphor for the message.

The Rule of Law – By Tom Bingham

The Rule of Law – By Tom Bingham

This ultra slim book quickly became the novel, which every Guardian-reading attorney started suggesting to people who wanted to take up law as a profession. To sum it up, this book basically says that every single person and authority of the state, be it private or public, must be bound by and entitled to reap the advantages of law that were made publicly and administered in the court.

The Trial – By Franz Kafka

The Trial – By Franz Kafka

This book of law deals with Kafka’s perspective of law. Law is anticipated to be just and fair.  If it isn’t, then it’s expected that people work in harmony to knock over and rectify it. However, as per Kafka – Law is theoretical. It talks about justice and equality. But, is there a country that absolutely follows this concept?

Kafka’s analysis right through the book is considered as a metaphor, since it doesn’t point towards a law in particular, instead sheds light on THE LAW in general. The book also talks about corruption and yearn of judges in the court.

Well, there we have it! So, what are you waiting for? Get your head down and start reading!

How to Prepare for a Job Interview While Planning a Wedding

How to Prepare for a Job Interview While Planning a Wedding
You’re engaged, and wedding planning is underway—you’ve decided on a date, you’re searching for the perfect wedding dress, your guest list is almost complete, and you can’t wait for the big day! As exciting and life-changing as weddings can be, though, real life doesn’t stop moving.

Amongst all of the wedding planning, you may find yourself in search of a new job. Whether it’s due a move coming up after the nuptials, or it’s just high time you found a job where your skills are better valued, you may end up starting interviews and even receive an offer for a new position.

Latest Updated on May 11, 2018

Starting a new job, no matter what point in life, is both exciting and stressful, but on top of a wedding, it can be overwhelming. Don’t get too stressed out just yet, though. Here are some tips to help you prepare for and nail your interview(s) amidst all of the wedding planning:

1.Don’t worry about bringing up your honeymoon (unless you have an offer)

It might be tempting to let interviewers know about the time off you have planned to enjoy your honeymoon with your soon-to-be spouse, but unless you have an offer, there’s no need to let them know yet. In fact, it could cause them to consider other candidates more seriously if they need someone to start soon. If you do get an offer, though, you can accept then let them know about the time you have planned to take off.

2.Complete your to-do list at the job you’re leaving

Wedding planning and interview prepping can be stressful enough. Add on top of that the weight of everything you have to get done before you leave your current job and you’ll feel overwhelmed and as if you’ll never get away. As soon as you know that you want to leave and have interviews lined up, start completing tasks from your to-do list on the down low and get everything wrapped up for when you’re ready to go. Getting stuff done will help you better focus on the interview and wedding planning process.

3.Do some research on the company

It’s always a good practice to research a company before going into an interview. Familiarizing yourself with who they are and what they do will not only help you get a better feel for the job you’re applying for but will help you come up with some good questions to ask at the end of your interview. Check the company out on Google, LinkedIn, and any review sites to get a better idea of who they are.

4.  Check for a cheat sheet

Sometimes current employees will post reviews and even interview questions that they were asked when they were being considered for their position. This can be a huge help and relieve a lot of stress when you’re preparing for an interview. If you can find a cheat sheet from other employees, you’ll be able to be better prepared and get a better idea of how the interview will go.

5.Practice interview questions

Once you know what kinds of questions the company asks prospective employees (if possible), gather a list of standard interview questions to start going over. Think through them and carefully come up with your answers on your own, then, have your fiancé, a friend, or family member help you run through them and give you feedback so you can perfect your responses before you go.

6.Try out the company’s products or services (and use them as part of your wedding if possible)

What better way to get to know a company than by trying out their products or services? Testing out their offerings will give you a more intimate knowledge of the company as well as a different perspective than you’ll have on the corporate side of things. In some cases, you might even be able to use their products or services as a part of your wedding which will help you knock out some wedding planning and interview prep at the same time.

7. Know the best route for getting there

One of the biggest stresses of an interview is finding the location and getting there on time. Spend time the night before reviewing the shortest route from your home or work to the place of the interview. If you’re really worried about it, you could even try driving the route a couple of times around the same time your interview is scheduled to make sure you get there and can get there on time.

8.Make a list of questions you have

After an interview, most interviewers will ask prospects if they have any questions they’d like to ask. It’s always good to have questions prepared so that you can learn more about the company and show that you have a genuine interest. You might want to ask about the company culture or the expectations for the person in the position beyond the job functions described. Whatever it is, make sure you have some thought-out questions prepared.

9. Take some time away from both wedding planning and prepping for the interview

As you well know, wedding planning and interview prepping are stressful on their own. When combined, it’s even crazier. It’s important to take a day or at least a few hours away from both to relax, wind down, and spend some time with your fiancé.

10.The night before, focus only on the interview

The night before the interview, put all wedding planning on hold and focus only on the interview. Run through your mock interview again, and then double check all of your questions. Look up the company one more time, and take another look at the route. Once that’s done, consider going to bed a little bit early and make sure you have a good breakfast waiting for you in the morning to help you get a solid start.

Final Thoughts

Life doesn’t slow down, even if we wish it would. You may find yourself planning a wedding and prepping for an interview at the same time, but as stressful as that can be, taking time away from wedding planning to prep for the interview will be worth it in the end. How else do you like to prepare for job interviews?

  •  Do you have enough room to spread out all of your notes and textbooks?
  •  Do you have a comfortable chair? Is there sufficient light in the room?
  •  Are all distractions out of the way? Distractions are something that you need to avoid and be sure that you are comfy and can focus.
Some of us like to revise in silence whilst others like to have some music on in the background. Some of us like to work in a cluttered environment and some prefer to be organized and tidy.

You need to consider what works best for you and make sure that you spend time getting this right.

2.Use Diagrams and Flow Charts

When revising, visual aids can be very useful.

When you start revising a topic, begin by writing down everything that you know and use a highlighter to highlight any gaps in your knowledge.

When you get closer to an exam you will need to condense this information so that you have a one-page diagram.

By doing this you will be able to quickly recall everything that you need to know for an exam.

There are plenty of apps available to download which can aid your revision. Custom writing services are also at your disposal to help you out.

4.Time/ Study Schedule

When it comes to revision, make sure that you leave enough time to revise and that you haven’t left it until the last minute.

Although some students like to cram at the last minute, you’re probably aware that this is not the ideal approach to take when it comes to exam preparation.

To organize your time efficiently, create a timetable for your revision. Begin by noting down the number of exams that you have and the days/dates that you have to sit them.

The next step is to organize your revision accordingly. It may be that some exams need more revision time than others, so you need to create a balance that works well for you.

5.Past Year(s) Exam Papers

A great way of preparing for an exam is to practice old papers. This way you will be prepared for the format of the questions, and you can also time yourself so that you know that you are taking the correct amount of time per section.

6.Study In Groups

Organize study sessions with friends. This way, you can answer each other’s questions.

It may even be worth setting a specific time to study, and this way, you can ensure that you all remain focused and on task.

Use the people around you at exam time. Explain answers to them as this will help you to get answers clear in your mind and should also help to highlight aspects that you may need to do more work on.

8.Brain Food

You may crave treats, and you don’t have time to cook. Remember what you eat can affect your focus and energy levels so try and stay clear of junk foods.

Choose nutritious food which will fuel your brain and body; opt for blueberries, yoghurt, seeds, nuts, and fish to help memory and concentration.

On the day of exams, make sure that you eat a meal consisting of foods that give the body a slow release of energy. Although sugar may be tempting, you will find that it causes energy levels to plummet.

9.Take Breaks

You may feel like you need to revise for hours on end but this is actually ineffective. Consider if you were getting prepared for a marathon, you wouldn’t run all day and night.

So when to comes to revising for exams, it’s a known fact that in order to retain information, regular breaks are useful.

We all work best at different times of the day. If you study better first thing, then start early and remember to take a break before lunch.

If, on the other hand, you study better at night, then take a longer break earlier in the day so that once it’s evening time, you can focus and settle down.

Don’t ever feel guilty for getting out and enjoying the sun as vitamin D plays an important role in the health of your brain.

10.Drink lots Water

In order for your brain to work at its best, it needs to be hydrated. Drink lots of water whilst you revise and also drink water on the day of your examinations.

11.On Exam Day

Don’t leave being prepared for the day of your exams.

Make sure that you know what you need to take with you and that know the route you will take to get to the exam and how long it will take to get there.

If possible, do a test run of your route and if you haven’t had a chance to do this, then write down some clear directions.

When you know how long it will take you to get to the place where your exams are held, allow some extra time.

You don’t want to end up in a situation where you have to run half of the distance or get confused about the directions. If you prefer you could make arrangements to travel with classmates or friends as long as they are punctual and won’t end up making you late.

5 Tips Every Parent Should Follow While Educating Their Child
Every parent wants their children to do well in studies. But most of them expect their kids to study all by themselves. This is not good parenting.
Just as a child’s responsibility is to learn what is taught, parents have a responsibility to create an environment where children can learn without feeling pressured or lonely. Latest Updated on May 6, 2018 Below, we look at five tips that every parent must follow when educating their children.

Be In Contact With The Teachers

Parents should always be in touch with their child’s teachers. It is the teachers who interact with your kid for the most part of the day. And over a period of time, they will develop an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of your child that you may never see. As such, being in touch with the teachers will ensure that you are always updated on how your child is doing in studies.
Listen to their suggestions on how to improve your child’s performance and implement them at home. Most schools, like Hebron Christian Academy and others, conduct regular parent-teacher meetings. Remember to attend them without fail.

Check Their Homework

Teachers assign homework so that students get a better understanding of the subject they are studying. Many children tend to skip doing their homework. As a consequence, their understanding of the subject suffers and they start getting lower grades.
This is why it is important to ensure that your child does all the assigned homework on time. So, check their books for the homework they are assigned for the day and make your child finish it before letting them indulge in games and other activities.

Be Available For Help

When trying to learn a subject, it is natural for a child to develop doubts. If these doubts are not cleared immediately, the kid will never understand the subject in-depth. And this can badly influence their grades.
To avoid this, make sure that your child knows that you are always available to help them out with any doubt. If you push them away when they come asking questions, then your child will shut themselves out and will never approach you for clearing a doubt. As a result, their knowledge of the subject matter will suffer.
Cultivate Good Habits
You should also cultivate some good habits in your children that will help them study better. For example, make your child go to bed at 10 PM and wake them up at 6 AM on a daily basis. Doing so will ensure that they get a proper sleep, wake up early in the morning, and remain energetic and enthusiastic all through the day.  This will inevitably make them study better as they won’t feel sleepy all day due to improper sleeping habits.

Offer Opportunities For Growth

Give your children opportunities to expand their knowledge. Set up a little library in their room with all the books necessary to study their subject in detail.
You can also set up a basic computer in their room and provide an internet connection so that the children can explore the net and gain more in-depth knowledge about their subjects.

Creative-Spoken-English Activities

Whatever the reason may be, it’s never too late to learn a new language. Google it and you’ll find a huge list of English speaking classes conducting course after graduation for those aspiring to learn the language with full enthusiasm.

Trust me, when you see someone communicate so flawlessly while you’re struggling with the same, you do feel demotivated and ultimately give up. This is natural but we do need to build our confidence level. This can be achieved in two ways but if done simultaneously.
  1. By enrolling yourself in an English speaking course
  2. Self-practice at home or elsewhere
Well, you must have heard about these schools and the short term courses that they offer; therefore, we’re here to discuss the 2nd way i.e. self-practice and different ways to do so.

1. Watch YouTube Videos in English
If you’re internet savvy and have previously used YouTube, you’re sorted. The best way to spend your free time is by watching videos that would help you improvise on your pronunciation skills and for a matter of fact, there are many Youtube channels committed to doing that. To name a few channels we have Let’s Talk- English Speaking Lessons, mmm English, English with Lucy etc.

2. Watch News and Weather on the TV or Internet

Inculcating the habit of watching English speaking news, is a good way to initiate a self practice session at home. You’ll often come across sub-titles at the bottom or may be a few advertisements at times, try and read what’s written. Do this on a daily basis; it will improve your vocabulary.

3. Speaking with a Tutor

The more you communicate the better will you be at speaking English fluently but whenever you do so, ensure that the one you’re communicating with is fluent enough so that you can be corrected. The best person to do this with would be your tutor.

4. Communicate with or Talk to Other English Learners

Learning in a group too is a fun idea and what better to do so other than over a cup of coffee with some of your school mates. You don’t need to sit all day long going through notes, that’s boring, you could rather discuss over a few interesting, trending topics, a movie or a TV show may be.

5. Listen to English Music

Music is fun, it rejuvenates but in this case it also teaches provided you listen to some good numbers. The best way to learn an English number just in case you aren’t sure of its lyrics is to google it and sings along. This is a very unique and fun way to learn, do try it out.

6. Watch Clips from Movies and TV Shows

Watch movie trailers, at times they do come with subtitles. Watching popular English series online or on TV too is a unique way to familiarizing yourself with the language. If you’re not sure what to watch, we’ve listed a few popular series below, maybe this can help.
  1. Friends
  2. The Big Bang Theory
  3. How I Met Your Mother
  4. The Simpsons
  5. The Game Of Thrones
