3-Year LLB or 5-Year LLB Program-Which is better?

Fast pace of globalisation and opening up of Indian economy has given an entire new meaning and definition to law profession in India. Earlier law graduates had little option other than to work as  a solicitor or barrister across various courts in India; Latest Updated on Jun 29, 2018

This has dramatically changed after economic liberalization as law graduates could explore newer and more lucrative opportunities in areas like property development, human resources, IT and ITES, financial and banking sector, NGOs,  corporates, etc.

Law schools have kept up with the changing times with top schools in India developing students with high levels of legal awareness and knowledge.

Two major types of courses associated with law education

The Indian legal education which was nothing much to write about since independence suddenly went into an overdrive mode with the establishment of National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore in 1986 and the introduction of five-year integrated LLB course after Class 12.

Now there are two ways to obtain a law degree.

You can enrol in an LLB program right after your intermediate.
  1. The 5-year integrated law program is meant for students who wish to study law right after passing out class 12.
  2. The 3-year LLB course is for graduates who wish to pursue LLB after their graduation.
The 3-year program is usually designed for people who find their calling a bit late and decide to pursue law after they have graduated.

3-Year LLB vs. 5-Year LLB—Which is better?

This is one question that is foremost in the mind of any law aspirant. Law faculty, career advisors, career councillors are always asked this question about as to which program is better and hence more preferable. The answer is pretty simple though. Both programs are good and serve their intended purpose well for their target audience.

If you want to make a career in law and have just completed your class 12, you need to enrol for 5-year integrated program without any second thoughts. However, if you are a late starter you can opt for 3 year LLB program without any hesitation.

A very important thing to note here, however, is that many of the new generation law schools including the National Law Universities (NLUs) no longer offer 3-year LLB program. So you need to start early if you wish to study in these prestigious law schools.

There are, however, other prestigious 5 year law colleges in India like the one belonging to O P Jindal Global University that offers 5 year law degree in India in addition to 3 year LLB program.

Jindal Law School has the expertise, faculty and the resources to develop dynamic and versatile lawyers who can make a difference in their area of expertise. Published Date: Jun 10, 2018 17:15 PM | Updated Date: Jun 10, 2018 17:15 PM
